Get to know your first aid kit and what should be inside it.
To avoid panic and tricky situations, one must be prepared to handle minor emergencies and be familiar with the
equipment in the first aid kit and their specific function.
A basic first aid kit may include things as:
a basic first aid manual or instruction booklet.
plasters in different shapes, sizes or forms
small, medium and large sterile gauze dressings, to cover different sizes of wounds
2 sterile eye dressings, because we have 2 eyes
triangular bandages, generally to support broken limbs
crêpe rolled bandages
safety pins to fix the bandages
disposable sterile gloves to avoid infection from dirty hands
tweezers, to pick out small shards or stings
alcohol-free cleansing wipes, to wipe soiled wound sites
sticky tape
thermometer (preferably digital), mercury in glass thermometer can be hazardous
skin rash cream, such as hydrocortisone or calendula
cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings
antiseptic cream
painkillers such as paracetamol (or infant paracetamol for children), aspirin (not to be given to children under 16), or ibuprofen
cough medicine
antihistamine cream or tablets for allergic reactions
distilled water for cleaning wounds
eye wash and eye bath
Medicines should be checked regularly to make sure they’re within their use-by dates.
